The story is that Hazrat Ali, the Prophet's cousin, let himself be sold as a slave to a cruel king, then threw up the six barriers to free a family from him. Every dam keeps a piece of that tale in its name: the sword that cut the rock, a wall said to be of cheese, the freed slaves, Ali's groom, the mint. The largest is Band-e Haibat, named for the awe the miracle caused, and a shrine stands on its shore. People wade in there because the water is held to cure illness, so when you get in it is a religious act before it is a swim. The walls are travertine, laid down by the spring water that fills the lakes. Only a handful of places on Earth dam whole lakes this way, and the others are wooded, their barriers green with moss. This plateau has no trees, so these walls stand bare pale stone.\n\nYou walk the crest of the wall between two lakes, in places no wider than a footpath, still water on one side and the spill on the other. From the rise you are level with the chain, stepping down the valley one dam at a time, each pool a different blue against red cliffs. Out on Band-e Haibat the painted pedal boats shaped like swans carry you over water that stays icy in July. The bare steppe around the lakes holds the Afghan snowfinch, a small ground bird found nowhere else. Afghanistan's first national park was declared here in 2009, and in 2013 four local women became the country's first rangers; since August 2023 the Taliban have barred Afghan women from entering it. The families keep arriving all day, up out of the heat of the lower valleys.
